Vision & Mission

Pushing the boundaries for microsurgery to new frontiers through innovation, research and education

As the training center for microsurgery in Europe (home to the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies Hands-On microsurgical courses and to many others), the Center for Complex Microvascular Surgery seeks to push the boundaries of microsurgery further and improve patient care and operative safety. We strive to achieve unparalleled surgical cure for the most complex conditions in vascular and skull base neurosurgery, ENT, orbital surgery, vascular surgery and plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Our research focuses on both developing new techniques and progressive refining of older ones, but also on the most effective training programs and training regimens for all levels, from beginner to most experienced.

We strive to offer every patient detailed, clear and comprehensive explanations of the conditions and treatment modalities, for both Dutch as well as international patients. All cases are extensively discussed in dedicated multidisciplinary meetings, and patients are presented with a tailor-made treatment plan. We collaborate and are a part of the many expertise centers and networks in the Erasmus MC, such as the Erasmus MC Stroke Center, The Erasmus MC Brain Tumor Center, or the WEVAR (Expertise Center for Vascular Malformations). We are the only center with a dedicated expertise center for pediatric AVMs (WEVAR hersenen).

We have extensive international collaborations with the best neurosurgical centers in Europe and the world, such as The Beth Israel Deaconess Aneurysm Center at Harvard University, Boston, USA, The Barrow Neurological Institute, Phoenix, USA, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, USA, Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, Rigshospitalet and Copenhagen University in Copenhagen, Denmark and many others.

Together with other European centers dedicated to the treatment of the most complex microvascular pathology, we have set up the European Expertise Network for Open Microvascular surgery, launched in October 2024.

We welcome you to explore our website, and look forward to seeing you in our outpatient clinic, collaborating with you on our many research endeavors or welcome you to one of our courses.
